According to Decision No. 3479/QĐ-BVHTTDL, the People’s Army Cinema, in collaboration with the Cinema Department, will prepare the application and submit English-subtitled copies to the Oscar organizing committee before the deadline.
Over the past three decades, Vietnam has submitted several films for the best international feature film category, including “The Scent of green papaya” (1993), “The white silk dress” (2006), “Yellow flowers on the green grass” (2016), and “Furie” (2019). While none have won, each entry has been seen as a milestone in raising the global profile of Vietnamese cinema.
“Red rain” concluded its theatrical release on September 28 after a 39-day run, grossing 710 billion VND (approx. USD 28.9 million) and attracting 8.1 million viewers, making it the highest-grossing and most-watched film in Vietnamese box office history.
Director Đặng Thái Huyền explained the decision to end screenings in September, noting that the plan was to coincide with the A80 event and then release the film on other platforms to reach soldiers and the wider public who could not attend cinemas.
Set during the 81-day battle to defend Quảng Trị Citadel, “Red rain” portrays a tragic yet heroic chapter of Vietnamese history, highlighting the courage and sacrifice of soldiers. The film has been praised for its poignant storytelling, striking visuals, evocative score, and strong performances.
