Cristiano Ronaldo has achieved another remarkable milestone in his legendary career, becoming the first footballer to reach billionaire status.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index update on Oct. 8, Ronaldo's net worth now stands at US$1.4 billion, marking the first time he has been recognized by the index and making him the first football player to achieve such a status.

Over his two-decade career at top European clubs like Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus, the 40-year-old Portuguese star has not only dominated the field with record-breaking performances but also capitalized on his fame through lucrative endorsement deals with brands like Armani and Nike.

In the twilight of his career, Ronaldo has entered the club of the world's richest sportspeople. In June, he signed a groundbreaking contract extension with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, reportedly worth over $400 million, along with a 15% ownership stake in the club.

His move to Al-Nassr, a club based in Riyadh, surprised many, but Ronaldo, with his signature self-confidence, stated that he sought a new challenge after achieving everything in European football. While critics questioned his ambitions, the transfer unlocked one of the most lucrative contracts in football history, along with the highest annual pay for any athlete. His Saudi earnings are tax-free, and his contract includes perks such as equity in the club and private jet access.

Bloomberg's valuation considers his career earnings, investments and endorsement deals, adjusting for taxes and market performance.

Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have long been rivals, both earning similar wages for years. However, their paths diverged in 2023, with Ronaldo joining Al-Nassr and Messi moving to Major League Soccer's Inter Miami in the U.S. Messi is also poised to earn a stake in the American club after his retirement, a deal that could bring him back on par with his rival again.

Messi has earned over $600 million in career pre-tax salary, according to Bloomberg's wealth index, which includes $20 million in guaranteed annual pay since 2023.

Both Ronaldo and Messi have benefited from astronomical pay inflation, far outpacing the career earnings of former stars like David Beckham, who earned around $100 million before retiring in 2013.

Some well-known athletes who reached billionaire status included Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and Roger Federer.
