Speaking at the “Unleashing Future Energy” seminar on September 16, Tuấn said the Central Highlands province has the resources to become a clean energy industrial center for Vietnam, the Central, and neighboring regions.
Gia Lai currently operates 61 hydropower projects (2,736 MW), 17 wind projects (916 MW), seven solar projects (590 MWp), and two biomass plants (130 MW).
These facilities contribute to energy security, job creation, and provincial revenue.
The revised national Power Development Plan VIII allocates more than 9,000 MW of renewable energy capacity for Gia Lai, laying the foundation for long-term growth.
The province benefits from average solar radiation of 4.6-5.2 kWh/m²/day, 1,900-2,200 annual sunshine hours, and wind speeds of 6-7 m/s, making it ideal for both solar and wind projects. Its 134 km coastline also enhances offshore wind potential.
Gia Lai has launched a Renewable Energy Human Resource Training and Development Center in partnership with Germany’s GEO Group and O-DOOR Vietnam Co., Ltd.
The initiative aims to address Vietnam’s shortage of skilled workers in solar, wind, green hydrogen, and energy storage technologies.
However, officials and delegates highlighted key challenges, including incomplete transmission infrastructure, regulatory bottlenecks, environmental concerns, and high capital requirements. Many projects are awaiting grid connection.
The seminar gathered officials, investors, and international partners to discuss opportunities and risks in Vietnam’s energy transition.
Deputy Director General of the Department of Electricity and Renewable Energy Tăng Thế Hùng noted that the Politburo’s Resolution No. 70/NQ-TW stresses renewable energy as a priority in ensuring national energy security by 2030, with a vision to 2045.
Tuấn called for greater cooperation among government agencies, businesses, research institutes, and financial institutions.
“Renewable energy development cannot be a solo effort,” he said, expressing confidence that Gia Lai will attract domestic and foreign partners to advance sustainable energy growth.
At the seminar, Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee, Phạm Anh Tuấn, presented the Decision approving the results of investor interest in the Renewable Energy Human Resource Training and Development Center project.
GEO Group, O-DOOR Vietnam Co., Ltd., and Quy Nhơn University signed a binding cooperation framework agreement; INDEL Petro Vietnam Co., Ltd., O-DOOR Vietnam Co., Ltd., and GEO Group also signed a binding cooperation framework agreement.
