Vietnamese war epic Mưa đỏ (Red Rain), directed by Đặng Thái Huyền, has crossed the 600 billion VND (US$24 million) mark after just 20 days in theaters, setting a new benchmark in the country’s film industry.

At mid-day on September 11, the film surpassed the milestone after earning an additional 6 billion VND from more than 50,000 tickets across roughly 4,000 screenings.

The achievement came only four days after Red Rain overtook Mai, directed by Trấn Thành, to become the highest-grossing Vietnamese film of all time. Mai previously held the record at 551.2 billion VND.

Since its release, Red Rain has consistently broken box office records. On September 1 and 2, the film grossed more than 50 billion VND per day, surpassing Mai’s peak single-day earnings of 43.9 billion VND, which many industry insiders once considered unbeatable.

During the September 5-7 weekend, Red Rain brought in 82.86 billion VND from 856,538 tickets and 12,767 screenings, accounting for more than 73% of total box office revenue nationwide.

The strong momentum pushed its cumulative total to 552 billion VND by September 7, officially cementing its status as Vietnam’s new box office leader.

Mưa đỏ reaches the 600 billion VND milestone after 20 days in theaters.

Despite the end of the National Day holiday, the film has maintained roughly 4,000 screenings daily, and industry experts suggest it could approach 700 billion VND if audience demand holds through the coming weekend.

The film’s dominance has overshadowed other domestic titles, including Làm giàu với ma: Cuộc chiến hột xoàn (81 billion VND) and Cô dâu ma (10.3 billion VND).

Meanwhile, new Vietnamese releases such as Tiệm cầm đồ: Có chơi có chịu and Khế ước bán dâu are entering theaters this weekend, alongside international titles including The Conjuring: Nghi lễ cuối cùng, Bộ ba sửu nhi đại náo mỏ vàng, and Pui Pui Molcar Molmax: Thú cưng hóa xế cưng.

Industry observers note that Red Rain may face its toughest competition yet when the highly anticipated Tử chiến trên không premieres later this month.
