Gia Lai sports festival Karate competition draws 200 athletes from 20 communes and wards

A karate competition featuring 200 athletes from 20 communes and wards across Gia Lai Province officially opened on June 23 at the Pleiku Sports Arena as part of the first Gia Lai Provincial Sports Festival 2026.

Competitors are vying for top honors in 30 events, including 25 kumite (sparring) categories and five kata (forms) categories.

The kumite program includes men's and women's team and individual events across a range of weight divisions. The men's individual competition is contested in 12 weight classes, from 40kg to over 84kg, while the women's individual competition features 11 weight classes, ranging from 36kg to over 65kg.

The kata competition consists of five events: men's individual, women's individual, men's team, women's team and mixed-gender team categories.

Following the opening ceremony, athletes immediately began competing in the men's and women's kata events.

The karate competition is scheduled to conclude with a closing ceremony on the afternoon of June 25.

The event is organized by the Gia Lai Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism as part of the province's inaugural Sports Festival.
