Gia Lai to launch ‘Conquering Pờ Yầu peak’ race in September

Gia Lai province will host the inaugural “Conquering Pờ Yầu Peak” cross-country race on Sept. 27, 2026, as part of efforts to promote local tourism and establish a signature annual sporting event.

The race will take place along the route leading to Pờ Yầu village in Lơ Pang commune, where the course reaches an elevation of 1,200 metres above sea level.

Organized by the People's Committee of Lơ Pang Commune, the event is intended to support the National Tourism Year - Gia Lai 2026 while showcasing the Pờ Yầu scenic area and encouraging the development of tourism linked with sports.

Organizers expect around 450 runners from within Gia Lai and other provinces to compete in two race categories: 4 kilometres and 11 kilometres. The route primarily follows steep concrete roads.

The 4km race is open to participants aged 16 and above, while the 11km event is reserved for runners aged 18 and older.

Alongside the competition, visitors and athletes will be able to attend a range of activities at the Pờ Yầu waterfall area, including food stalls, booths featuring local specialties, musical performances and traditional gong shows.

According to the People's Committee of Lơ Pang Commune, the event is designed not only to encourage sports and physical activity but also to introduce the natural scenery and cultural identity of Pờ Yầu village. The race is expected to help unlock the area's tourism potential and become a flagship event in the locality's calendar of cultural, sporting and tourism activities.

Registration for the race will remain open until Aug. 31.
