Teacher training admissions in Vietnam hit record highs, ending ‘last resort’ perception

Teacher training programs in Vietnam have reached record admission thresholds this year, with several majors demanding perfect scores, marking a sharp reversal from the long-standing perception of teaching as a fallback career.

Among the six majors nationwide requiring a perfect 30/30 score for entry in 2025, four belong to teacher training.

These include Chinese and English language education at the University of Languages and International Studies (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) and at the University of Foreign Languages (Hue University).

Even perfect scorers must meet additional conditions such as subject-specific minimums or listing the major as their first choice.

At Hue University, English language education requires at least 9.5 in foreign language and 8.5 in literature, while Chinese language education demands a full 10 in foreign language. French language education also saw a sharp rise, requiring over 27 points, an increase of more than eight points from 2024.

Elsewhere, admission scores climbed across major institutions. Ho Chi Minh City University of Education reported two majors above 29 and four above 28, compared with a peak of 28.6 last year.

Saigon University’s Chemistry Education topped 28.98, with Physics and Geography also above 28. Hanoi National University of Education required at least 27 points for 15 majors, with History Education exceeding 29.

Regional universities also posted record highs. Dalat University saw Mathematics Education rise to 28.5, up 2.7 points from 2024, while Physics and Chemistry also surpassed 28.

Can Tho University reported four majors above 28, and Tay Bac University, despite its remote location, had three above that threshold.

Education experts attribute the surge to recent government support, particularly Decree 116/2020, which provides financial assistance and job security for teacher training students.

The first cohort under the policy graduates this year, boosting awareness and confidence among candidates.

Dr. Huỳnh Trung Phong of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education said the high scores reflected both the appeal of the teaching profession and the strong caliber of applicants.

Nguyễn Hứa Duy Khang of Can Tho University noted that competitive intakes raise training quality and graduates’ competencies.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyễn Kim Hồng, former rector of Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, added that new legislation, including the Law on Teachers and Resolution 71 of the Politburo, has reinforced the government’s commitment to education as a national priority.

Compared with 10–15 years ago, admission scores for teacher training majors have nearly doubled. With multiple programs now requiring perfect or near-perfect scores, teaching has become one of the most prestigious and competitive career paths for Vietnam’s high school graduates.

Teachers’ salaries to rise by VND2-7 million per month

The Ministry of Education and Training is completing a draft regulation on salaries, allowances and incentive policies for teachers. The move is meant to implement the Law on Teachers, which was passed by the National Assembly in June this year and will take effect early next year, the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.

The ministry is also drafting a decree to guide several provisions of the law, including teacher recruitment procedures. The recruitment will comprise two rounds of examinations, in line with current regulations for public employees.

Notably, the second round will be redesigned to focus more closely on professional knowledge and practical teaching skills. This is aimed at ensuring a more accurate assessment of pedagogical capacity and professional competence across education levels.

The new approach is expected to address shortcomings in the previous recruitment process, which applied a uniform mechanism for public employees without fully accounting for the specific nature of teaching.
