Goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien has received his first call-up to the Vietnam national football team, his club Hoang Anh Gia Lai announced on the morning of March 12.

Head coach Kim Sang-sik named the 2003-born goalkeeper in a preliminary squad of 30 players preparing for the March 2026 FIFA international window. Trung Kien is one of five goalkeepers selected, alongside Nguyen Dinh Trieu, Patrik Le Giang, Filip Nguyen and Dang Van Lam.

The South Korean coach is expected to trim the squad to 23 players by March 21, with only three places available for goalkeepers. That leaves Trung Kien facing stiff competition, as he is the youngest among the five shot-stoppers called up for the camp.

Despite the challenge, the Gia Lai-born goalkeeper has drawn attention with strong performances in the 2025-2026 V.League season.

Statistics show Trung Kien has recorded 62 saves so far this season, the highest total among goalkeepers in the domestic league.

Vietnam are scheduled to play a friendly against Bangladesh on March 26 at Hang Day Stadium before hosting Malaysia on March 31 at Thien Truong Stadium in a qualifier for the 2027 Asian Cup.
