(GLO) – Vietnamese thriller “Tử chiến trên không” (Hijacked) has surged to the top of the country’s box office, grossing more than 171 billion VND (about USD 6.9 million) by September 30, following the exit of Red rain, which ended its theatrical run with 710 billion VND (about USD 28.7 million).

Directed by Hàm Trần and produced by the People’s Public Security Cinema in partnership with Galaxy Studio, the film recreates the gripping true story of a 1978 plane hijacking in Đà Nẵng.

Centered on the character Long (Thái Hòa) and his accomplices, the plot follows their attempt to seize a civilian aircraft and escape abroad, while nearly ten crew members, including two flight attendants portrayed by Kaity Nguyễn and Trâm Anh, struggle to resist the hijackers and safeguard the passengers.

Set entirely inside the cabin and cockpit, Hijacked delivers an atmosphere of claustrophobic suspense, portraying the battle of wits and strength between the crew and the criminals. The production highlights Vietnam’s early aviation history, just after reunification, when fledgling airlines faced threats from hostile forces.

Major General Đỗ Triệu Phong, Director of the Department of Communications of the People’s Public Security, said the release was a milestone, marking the first theatrical film from the People’s Public Security Cinema in over 30 years.

He emphasized the significance of the work, noting it was based on archival records and real cases, and serves as a tribute to the predecessors of today’s aviation security forces. The production also commemorates the 80th anniversary of Vietnam’s August Revolution and National Day.
