Nhon Chau island commune in Vietnam is set to receive an additional passenger ferry after the Nhon Chau 05 vessel completed its legal procedures and technical upgrades, local authorities confirmed.

The ferry is expected to begin serving residents before the Tet (Lunar New Year) 2026, easing longstanding pressure on the commune’s limited waterway transport network.

The Nhon Chau 05, owned by Le Van Hien of Dong Hamlet, is equipped with a new 380-horsepower engine and can carry up to 49 passengers along with 10 tonnes of cargo. Its return to service will increase the number of public ferries operating to and from the island to two.

Hien, 73, said his primary motivation for restoring the vessel was to support local mobility and essential services. “My greatest motivation is the desire to serve the people on the island, especially in transporting essential goods, providing medical support, and facilitating daily travel,” he said. He noted that the island previously relied on a single ferry operating one trip per day, which did not meet growing demand.

The Nhon Chau 05 had been out of service since March 2023 while undergoing documentation procedures and technical improvements. Its reinstatement follows nearly three years of preparation.
