Mai’s campaign ended in the semifinals after a tense 0–2 loss to a Thai opponent. She had earlier advanced with a strong qualifying-round win over a Timor Leste competitor.
In the men’s 54 kg category, Nguyễn Hồng Trọng delivered Vietnam’s standout result of the day, taking gold after a 2–1 victory against Indonesia’s Aziz Hidayat Tumakaka in a three-round final.
The results lifted Vietnam’s taekwondo medal count to six golds, four silvers, and seventeen bronzes. Officials said the Vietnamese Taekwondo delegation at the Games includes 29 members, comprising leaders, coaches, experts and 21 athletes.
Mai’s bronze also marked a significant achievement for Gia Lai’s taekwondo programme.
