U22 Vietnam struck twice in the closing minutes to defeat U22 Philippines 2-0 in the men’s football semi-final at the 33rd SEA Games, becoming the first team to secure a place in the final at Rajamangala Stadium.

Despite a clear gap in historical SEA Games achievements, U22 Philippines arrived with growing confidence after eliminating defending champions U22 Indonesia en route to the semi-finals.

The side coached by Garrath McPherson had also reached the last four of the Southeast Asian U23 Championship in July 2025, prompting a cautious approach from U22 Vietnam head coach Kim Sang-sik.

Vietnam began at a measured tempo, sitting deep in their own half and conceding possession. The approach allowed U22 Philippines to control much of the ball and press forward, particularly through their wings. However, their attacks failed to produce a clear breakthrough, with goalkeeper Trung Kiên rarely tested in decisive moments.

Vietnam’s own attacking efforts were limited in the first half under aggressive pressure from the Philippine defence. Striker Đình Bắc struggled for space and support, with Vietnam’s best chance arriving late in the half when Khuất Văn Khang fired a powerful left-footed shot inside the box, only to be denied by goalkeeper Guimaraes.

After the break, Kim Sang-sik ordered a more aggressive approach as Vietnam sought to avoid extra time. Đình Bắc, Xuân Bắc, Thanh Nhàn and Lê Victor all threatened, but Guimaraes remained resolute as the Philippines defence held firm for most of the half.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 89th minute. Following pressure from Đình Bắc, Phi Hoàng delivered a precise cross that Văn Thuận headed into the near corner, leaving Guimaraes with no chance.

Moments later, Vietnam struck again. In stoppage time, Thanh Nhàn curled a free kick from the left directly into the net, sealing the victory and extinguishing any hopes of a late Philippine response.

Two goals in three minutes proved decisive, leaving McPherson’s side unable to recover as time expired. The 2-0 win sends U22 Vietnam into the SEA Games 33 final, secured by a late and clinical surge.
