The provincial People’s Committee has issued a plan to implement the project “Day to honour Vietnamese language among overseas Vietnamese communities,” with activities to be held throughout the year and a particular focus on Sept. 8, Vietnamese Language Honouring Day.
The activities may be incorporated into festivals and commemorations marking major national and provincial holidays, according to the plan.
The program will target overseas Vietnamese communities, particularly people from Gia Lai living abroad and younger generations in areas with large Vietnamese populations.
Gia Lai will coordinate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other central ministries and agencies to implement activities tailored to the province’s conditions.
As part of the program, the province will introduce cultural products, literary works, poetry and traditional arts associated with the Vietnamese language.
It will also promote “Gia Lai - the birthplace of the Vietnamese script ” and showcase traditional art forms, including tuồng, or classical drama, and bài chòi, a form of Vietnamese folk singing, to overseas Vietnamese communities.
The province will strengthen communication on the significance of Vietnamese Language Honouring Day and raise awareness of the importance of preserving and promoting the Vietnamese language among students in Gia Lai and people from the province who are studying, living and working abroad.
The plan also calls for research and development of Vietnamese-language book collections and learning materials for students of Vietnamese descent in localities in Laos and Cambodia.
Gia Lai will recommend sending teachers to provide Vietnamese-language instruction to children of Vietnamese origin overseas, while also strengthening Vietnamese-language teaching, cultural exchanges and interaction involving international students and foreigners in the province.
The Department of Foreign Affairs will serve as the focal point for monitoring and inspecting implementation.
It will compile progress and results reports for submission to the provincial People’s Committee and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as required.
The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism will lead the organization of Vietnamese language honouring activities linked to traditional culture, arts, cultural exchanges and promotional events.
The Department of Education and Training will integrate Vietnamese language appreciation activities into curricula and extracurricular programs and coordinate implementation under the plan.
Relevant departments, agencies, organizations and People’s Committees of communes and wards will implement the plan according to their assigned responsibilities and submit annual progress and results reports to the Department of Foreign Affairs by Nov. 15 each year.
