(GLO) – Despite relentless rains battering Vietnam’s Central Highlands for more than a month, hundreds of workers from Gia Lai Urban Works Joint Stock Company continue to maintain the “green–clean–beautiful–bright” look of Pleiku.

Their tireless efforts come as the province prepares for the 1st Congress of the Gia Lai Provincial Party Committee for the 2025–2030 term.

Situated in the western part of Gia Lai province, Pleiku experiences a stark two-season climate, six months of sunshine followed by six months of rain. The recent month-long downpour has severely tested the city’s infrastructure, damaging roads, uprooting trees, and disrupting public lighting systems.

Deputy Director Nguyễn Văn Ngà said the biggest challenges are the continuous storms and poor public awareness. “Repairing potholes and fixing roads is extremely difficult. Sometimes, after patching up the roads, a single night of rain washes everything away, and we have to start all over again,” he explained.

Beyond road repairs, workers have faced dangerous conditions pruning trees and fixing lighting systems amid heavy rain. Yet, driven by duty, they continue their work in raincoats, ensuring the city remains safe and orderly.

To welcome the upcoming provincial congress, the company has mobilized all staff and equipment, focusing on four priority areas, environmental sanitation, drainage, greenery maintenance, and public lighting. Nearly 200 illegal dumping sites have been cleared, including piles of rubble, tree branches, and broken glass. Repair crews are patching potholes across 22 damaged roads, while teams prune tall trees and maintain ornamental plants along major roads.

Efforts to repair the public lighting system, particularly along national highways and city gateways, have also been accelerated. The company reports it has allocated funds exceeding VND 2 billion (approximately USD 78,000) for repairs and maintenance in the fourth quarter of 2025.

“The company places special emphasis on pruning trees during the stormy season, inspecting and removing dead trees at risk of falling. Despite the challenging weather, with the collective effort of all staff, we are determined to achieve our goals,” Mr. Ngà said.

In parallel, the company is partnering with local authorities to enhance public awareness. Campaigns are being launched to discourage residents from dumping waste in unauthorized areas and to encourage compliance with waste collection schedules.

Through persistent effort under difficult conditions, Gia Lai’s urban workers remain the city’s “unsung heroes,” ensuring that wards such as Diên Hồng, Thống Nhất, Hội Phú, An Phú, and the communes of Gào and Biển Hồ retain their vibrant and clean appearance, especially as the province prepares for its major political event.
