Earlier, L.Đ.T.A., a student, was on the way home from school when a traffic accident occurred. The student was rushed to Hoang Anh Gia Lai University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in critical condition.
The right lower leg was severely crushed, the skin was pale, blood pressure had dropped, the patient was in shock, the foot was cold, and no pulse could be detected on the dorsum of the foot.
Examination and vascular ultrasound revealed a complete occlusion of the popliteal artery, putting the patient at high risk of leg necrosis if vascular revascularization surgery was not performed within the critical time window.
Facing the risk of the patient losing their leg, the medical team at Hoang Anh Gia Lai University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital urgently provided resuscitation and performed emergency surgery. They grafted a 15-centimeter segment of the damaged popliteal artery to restore blood flow to the leg.
The surgery lasted more than three hours and was successful. After the operation, blood circulation to the leg was reestablished. The patient's foot gradually warmed, the skin regained its pink color, and the toes could move again.
The patient is currently being monitored and treated at the Department of Neurosurgery and Orthopedic Trauma of the hospital.
