The event will take place at the newly built nhà rông in Ia Gri village, Bien Ho commune. It aims to revive a ritual that is gradually disappearing from community life and help preserve Jrai traditions and the gong heritage of the Central Highlands.
The ceremony holds an important place in Jrai cultural and spiritual life. It gives villagers an opportunity to thank their deities, known as Yang, and pray for peace, prosperity and good harvests. It also honours the community’s collective efforts to build and maintain its shared house.
Under the programme, a village elder will invite the Yang to witness the completion of the communal house. Other rituals will include sprinkling water inside the building and inviting villagers to join the celebrations. The buffalo sacrifice will be omitted from the reenactment.
Gong performances, xoang dancing and cultural exchanges will follow. Visitors will also be able to sample traditional food and share jar wine with local residents.
An accompanying exhibition, “The Cultural Space of Gia Lai Gongs,” will offer further insight into the region’s cultural traditions.
Built with support from Gia Lai province, the Ia Gri communal house was completed in time for the wild sunflower season and the International Gong Festival.
