Youth volunteers in Vietnam’s Gia Lai province have delivered extensive aid to areas heavily damaged by Storm No. 13, repairing homes, restoring electricity and distributing relief packages to help residents recover.

From November 12–14, the Gia Lai Provincial Youth Union coordinated with multiple organizations to provide emergency support.

On November 12–13, the province and the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union distributed 600 relief packages, 200 in each of the communes Phù Mỹ Bắc, Phù Mỹ Đông and An Lương. Each package was valued at 2 million VND (≈ USD 80).

Nine households whose homes were completely destroyed received 40 million VND (≈ USD 1,600) each. Delegation members worked with local authorities to assess damage, visit affected families and guide them on how to allocate aid for rebuilding safe housing.

Nguyễn Đức Trung of the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union said coastal areas suffered “immense” destruction but early communication and evacuation efforts reduced losses. He said the delegation aimed to deliver support quickly to ease residents’ hardship.

On November 14, the Provincial Youth Union, working with Power Generation Corporation 3, organized further assistance in Đề Gi commune. Volunteers repaired and replaced electrical wiring, bulbs and fans for 20 disadvantaged households, worth 60 million VND (≈ USD 2,400). An additional 100 million VND (≈ USD 4,000) was allocated to repair 10 severely damaged homes.

Students in three affected schools received 3,000 notebooks, 300 pens and 60 scholarships valued at 500,000 VND (≈ USD 20) each. Authorities also distributed 200 cash gifts of 1 million VND (≈ USD 40) to meet urgent needs.

Phạm Hồng Hiệp, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Gia Lai and Secretary of the Provincial Youth Union, said youth teams had been mobilized to clear debris, repair infrastructure and coordinate social resources. He called on young people to support long-term recovery efforts.

Among the hardest hit was Trà Thị Lẹ of Phú Thứ hamlet, whose home collapsed in the storm. She received 40 million VND from the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union and 60 million VND (≈ USD 2,400) from the province. “I was very worried,” she said, adding that the support encouraged her to rebuild sooner than planned.

Shrimp-farming households also received assistance. Huỳnh Thị Bích Thủy of An Xuyên 3 hamlet, a single mother whose home and shrimp pond were destroyed, said the support “gives me hope to persevere and start over.”

Local authorities reported widespread losses. In An Lương commune, more than 400 homes were flooded, over 400 hectares of aquaculture were damaged and four homes collapsed. Secretary of the Party Committee Trần Quốc Vinh said land is being allocated to poor and near-poor households for long-term safe housing.

In Đề Gi commune’s Xuân An hamlet, prolonged power outages disrupted lives. Resident Phan Thị Thạch said the community waited a week for electricity restoration. She expressed relief after young electricians from Power Generation Corporation 3 worked “from early morning until late at night” to restore power.
