Two resolutions passed by the provincial People’s Council provide for a subsidy of VND200 million [about US$7,700] for each charter flight arriving at Phu Cat Airport and a 50% reduction in entrance fees for international visitors at several major attractions.
The measures aim to help travel businesses meet costs, encourage new air routes and expand the province’s international tourism market.
Support for community-based tourism covers infrastructure, funding, training and the development of local tourism products.
Together, the policies address two connected priorities: bringing more visitors to Gia Lai and developing experiences rooted in its landscapes, culture and community life.
The province combines coastal and forest landscapes with distinctive cultural traditions. Its tourism appeal, however, remains less established than that of destinations such as Nha Trang, Hoi An and Hue.
Flight subsidies and discounted admission may encourage businesses to organise tours and give travellers an additional reason to visit. Sustaining that interest will depend on accommodation, service quality, transport connections and the experiences available.
Encouraging visitors to return, stay longer and spend more will require attractions and services that remain compelling beyond the initial incentives.
For community-based tourism, financial assistance and infrastructure are only part of the task. Residents also need hospitality skills, the ability to organise visitor activities and support to develop suitable products.
Preserving cultural identity means keeping heritage connected to everyday community life, while avoiding repetitive performances that diminish its meaning. Direct benefits for residents can strengthen their incentive to protect and promote local traditions.
The resolutions’ effectiveness will therefore depend on more than the initial number of flights or visitors. Sustained air routes, broader markets, higher tourist spending and increased community income will also be key measures.
The longer-term challenge is to turn the initial support into lasting strengths, allowing Gia Lai’s tourism industry to grow through the appeal of its landscapes, culture and people.
