Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism sets second-half priorities after strong tourism and sports performance

Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has outlined its priorities for the second half of 2026, focusing on institutional reform, cultural development, tourism growth, digital transformation after reporting broad progress across the sector during the first six months of the year.

The ministry announced the agenda at a conference on July 9 reviewing first-half performance and setting tasks for the remainder of 2026. Held in a hybrid format, the meeting connected 34 locations nationwide.

Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Lâm Thị Phương Thanh and deputy ministers chaired the conference, while Vice Chairwoman of the Gia Lai Provincial People’s Committee Nguyễn Thị Thanh Lịch and provincial culture, sports and tourism officials attended from Gia Lai.

The ministry said 2026, the first year of implementing the Resolution of the 14th National Party Congress and the 2026-2030 socio-economic development plan, is centred on carrying out Politburo Resolution No. 80-NQ/TW on the development of Vietnamese culture and National Assembly Resolution No. 28/2026/QH16 on the development of Vietnamese culture.

During the first half of the year, the ministry accelerated institutional reform, submitting 26 legal documents to competent authorities and issuing 18 circulars.

Tourism remained one of the sector’s strongest performers, attracting nearly 12.3 million international visitors, up almost 15% from a year earlier, while domestic travel reached about 81 million trips. Total tourism revenue was estimated at VND569 trillion (approximately US$21.7 billion).

The ministry also submitted proposals to the Prime Minister for the recognition of two special national relics, 30 national treasures and nine national relics, while recommending the inscription of 12 items on the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

In sports, Vietnamese athletes won 451 international medals. The national under-17 football team qualified for the FIFA U17 World Cup 2026 finals and won the Southeast Asian U17 Championship.

Delegates at the conference discussed measures to strengthen institutional reform, advance science and technology, accelerate digital transformation, promote tourism and cultural industries, and implement national target programmes for cultural development.

In her closing remarks, Minister Lâm Thị Phương Thanh called for continued efforts in the second half of the year to improve institutions, effectively implement Politburo Resolution No. 80 and accelerate the National Target Programme for Cultural Development for the 2025-2035 period.

She also urged the sector to further develop tourism as a spearhead economic industry, speed up digital transformation, expand cultural industries and strengthen coordination with local authorities to achieve the ministry’s 2026 objectives.
