The conference, titled “Sports Tourism: A Major Opportunity for Gia Lai’s Socio-Economic Development,” was organized by the Gia Lai Department of Science and Technology in collaboration with Hung Vuong University in Ho Chi Minh City.
Participants highlighted the province’s unique advantages following the expansion of development space between the South Central Coast and Central Highlands regions. Gia Lai now combines coastal access, highland landscapes, abundant natural resources, rich indigenous culture and a rapidly developing tourism infrastructure.
Experts noted that the province possesses strong foundations for developing distinctive and competitive sports tourism products. These include beaches, golf courses, coastal running and cycling routes, as well as highland scenery featuring lakes, waterfalls, primeval forests and the Central Highlands Gong Culture Space, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Binh Dinh traditional martial arts, a cultural heritage with national and international recognition, was also identified as a valuable asset for creating sports tourism experiences rooted in local identity.
The conference comes as Gia Lai prepares to host National Tourism Year 2026 under the theme “The Great Highlands Touch the Blue Sea,” a milestone that experts described as a significant opportunity to promote the province’s image and strengthen its reputation as a green, experiential and sports tourism destination for domestic and international visitors.
Through presentations and in-depth discussions, specialists proposed a range of measures to unlock the province’s sports tourism potential, strengthen links between sports, tourism, culture and investment, and provide a scientific foundation for Gia Lai’s sports economy development strategy through 2030, with a vision to 2050.
Many experts said Gia Lai’s greatest strength lies in its ability to connect the sea with the highlands, culture with sports, and tourism with the creative economy.
They argued that these advantages could support the development of a large-scale sports tourism ecosystem, help establish a distinctive destination brand and position Gia Lai as a regional hub for sports tourism.
Research findings, presentations and policy recommendations from the conference will be compiled in the official proceedings, serving future research, teaching, policy-making and the practical development of sports tourism in Vietnam.
