As the Lunar New Year approaches, low-income households across Gia Lai province are moving into newly built Great Solidarity houses, gaining safe shelter and renewed confidence after years of hardship.

The housing support programme, funded by local Fatherland Front Committees, businesses and community groups, has enabled families to celebrate Tet in secure homes instead of deteriorated structures long at risk during storms.

In Hoi Phu ward’s Ia Lang village, the family of Mrs. H’Than received a VND 160 million (approx. USD 6,400) house supported by the ward’s Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, the Gia Lai Provincial Business Association, which contributed VND 60 million (USD 2,400), and local residents.

The family previously lived in a leaking wooden structure with rotting walls and a damp earthen floor. “Before, whenever it rained, I couldn’t sleep. Now I can work with peace of mind and no longer worry about storms,” she said.

A similar transformation has taken place for Mrs. To Thi Lien of Thong Nhat ward’s Residential Group 10 Yen The. Elderly and in poor health, she had long relied on her children to patch the cracked walls and misaligned metal roof of her old home.

With a VND 60 million (USD 2,400) donation from Gia Lai Education Printing and Investment Development Joint Stock Company and family contributions, a new VND 120 million (USD 4,800) house was completed before Tet. “Now that she has a new home, the whole family feels much more at ease,” said her son, Dam Van Khang.

In Hoai Nhon ward, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee partnered with Dai Thu Construction Co., Ltd. of Ho Chi Minh City to hand over a nearly VND 500 million (USD 20,000) house to the family of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Huong in Truong An 1 neighborhood. Her family had lived for years in a severely degraded home while she supported a sick husband and a school-aged child through unstable odd jobs. With the new house completed just in time for the holiday, she said the support has given her “great motivation” to continue caring for her family.

Local Fatherland Front Committees have mobilised agencies, businesses and the public to contribute to the “For the Poor” Fund, financing the construction, renovation and repair of hundreds of homes across the province.

According to Mrs. Doan Thi Bich Ngoc, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Hoi Phu ward, housing support remains a core priority in social welfare efforts. Committees coordinate with Party cells, authorities and mass organisations to assess households’ needs and ensure aid is transparent and targeted.

Beyond housing, many localities are also assisting livelihoods and educational opportunities for children from poor families to drive sustainable poverty reduction.

With the completion of new Great Solidarity houses ahead of the Year of the Horse 2026, disadvantaged households are entering the New Year in safer, more resilient homes, symbolising community compassion and offering a stronger foundation for the future.
