Vietnam has launched its first international quantum computing hackathon, marking a significant step in its push toward strategic technologies and long-term innovation.

The International Quantum Computing Hackathon (QC4SG 2026) opened in mid-February in Hanoi and will run through 2026, with Gia Lai Province serving as a coordinating partner.

Jointly organized by the Vietnam Quantum Innovation and Expert Network (VNQuantum), the National Innovation Center (NIC), Switzerland’s Open Quantum Institute (OQI) and the Gia Lai People’s Committee, the program aims to harness quantum computing to address real-world development challenges.

Gia Lai signals ambition in strategic technology

Local authorities say participation signals a deliberate shift toward next-generation technologies. Nguyễn Hữu Hà, Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Science and Technology, said science and technology are considered a long-term growth driver. The hackathon, he added, gives Gia Lai early access to emerging trends while strengthening cooperation among government, researchers, enterprises and international partners.

Organizers emphasize that QC4SG 2026 goes beyond theory by guiding teams to tackle practical problems, including those rooted in local development.

Quantum computing for agriculture, climate and materials

With strengths in agriculture, land resources and diverse ecosystems, Gia Lai faces increasing pressure from climate change and sustainability demands. Quantum-based modeling and optimization could support environmental forecasting, agricultural productivity, supply-chain efficiency and land-use planning.

Quantum technology is also relevant to molecular-level material simulation, a field tied to semiconductor and advanced material research. While Gia Lai is not yet a semiconductor center, early engagement may bolster its long-term competitiveness in attracting investment.

QC4SG 2026 is now open for registration and will accept applications until March 31, 2026.

The competition is open to students, programmers, startups, and anyone interested in quantum computing combined with AI.

Registration open until March 2026

QC4SG 2026 is open to students, researchers, programmers, startups and others interested in combining quantum computing with AI. Registration runs until March 31, 2026.

The main program week will take place in Gia Lai in July, featuring intensive training, scientific forums and networking events. In-person sessions are expected to be held at the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE), known for hosting global scientific conferences.

Tech ecosystem and international partners

The province also hosts technology companies including FPT and TMA Solutions, together with emerging AI initiatives. Organizers say this combination of scientific infrastructure and enterprise presence will help incubate projects after the event.

Twenty teams, half Vietnamese, half international, will be selected for the main week. Promising groups will receive six months of mentorship to refine products and seek investment. Representatives from technology firms such as Meta, Pasqal, IQM and Samsung are expected to attend.

Gia Lai plans to use the occasion to showcase its development potential, investment climate and ambition in high-tech sectors.

Commitment to post-event support

To prepare for the hackathon, the province will establish organizing and specialized subcommittees for content, communications and logistics. It also plans to provide mechanisms and testing environments for viable post-competition projects.

Gia Lai will allocate funding to help form at least three startups from winning teams, positioning the hackathon not merely as a media event, but as part of a broader effort to build an innovation ecosystem tied to strategic technologies.
