Born in 2003 into a farming family in Meo village, Dak Song commune, Gia Lai province, Châu’s life was upended in 2024 when his father died of liver cancer. The loss left the family reliant on his mother’s unstable income from day labour and farm work. Shortly after, Châu discovered he had inherited a genetic illness from his father, requiring long-term treatment.
Despite the emotional and financial strain, he chose to continue his education. “I worry about my illness and my family; but if I give up now, I won’t have any more opportunities”, he said.
Châu had initially enrolled in a Law programme at Hue University after graduating high school in 2023 with a score of 23. However, financial pressures forced him to return home. A local recruitment event led him to Gia Lai College, where he switched to studying Plant Protection, aligning both with his circumstances and his goal of helping local farmers.
“In my hometown, people grow many crops but don’t know how to effectively prevent pests and diseases. I want to study this field so I can help everyone in the future”, he said.
As a student from a disadvantaged area, Châu is exempt from tuition fees. At the start of his studies, he received VND 6 million (about USD 240) from a benefactor in Ho Chi Minh City, providing initial support.
To cover daily expenses, he works part-time, taking on farm jobs such as coffee picking and fertilizing crops during the day, and working as a restaurant server at night on weekends. “There are days when I work until late at night before returning to my room. Even though I’m exhausted, I still make it to class on time the next morning”, he said.
Alongside his studies, Châu serves as class president of the Plant Protection 2024AB class and actively participates in Youth Union activities both at college and in his hometown.
Faculty members have noted his progress. Nguyễn Thị Như Ngọc, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, described him as disciplined and hardworking, highlighting his consistent academic improvement.
His efforts have been recognised at the provincial level. Châu was recently named among 56 outstanding Youth Union members honoured by the Provincial Youth Union. He also won first prize in the “Rung chuông vàng” (Golden Bell Challenge) competition at Gia Lai College, outperforming 99 other contestants.
Through persistence and determination, Châu continues to pursue his studies while contributing to his community, despite the challenges he faces.
