At the end of April 2026, fleets of vessels returned to Tam Quan port in Hoai Nhon Bac Ward, Gia Lai Province, unloading holds filled with fresh fish. Among them were several “giant” tuna exceeding 300 kg, underscoring a strong fishing season.
According to Dang Van Dan, Acting Director of the Tam Quan Fishing Port Management Board, the port recorded 1,155 vessel arrivals since the start of April, with an estimated total catch of around 2,553 tonnes of oceanic fish.
While the number of vessels declined compared to the same period in 2025, total output nearly doubled, reflecting improved harvesting efficiency and favorable fishing conditions.
The quality of the catch has also stood out. The largest tuna, weighing 310 kg, was caught by vessel BD 99141-TS operated by fisherman Nguyen Kim Loi from Hoai Nhon Ward. Another large catch, a 245-kg tuna, was landed by vessel BD 95704-TS captained by Huynh Kim Anh from Hoai Nhon Bac Ward.
Rising demand has pushed up prices. Traders are currently purchasing oceanic tuna at about 110,000 VND per kilogram (approximately $4.40) at Quy Nhon fishing port and between 100,000 and 110,000 VND per kilogram ($4.00–$4.40) at Tam Quan, up by 5,000–10,000 VND per kilogram from a year earlier.

At current prices, the 310-kg tuna could fetch more than 30 million VND (around $1,200), offering a significant return for fishermen after long and demanding offshore voyages.
