Hospital representatives recently presented VND 26.1 million ($1,004) to patient U Sotphorn, born in 1995, who is being treated at the Department of General Surgery.
Doctors said the patient was diagnosed with generalized peritonitis caused by a perforated hollow organ, which led to septic shock, a critical and potentially fatal condition. During the initial surgery, he suffered septic shock, multiple organ failure and necrotic ulcers in the small intestine.
The patient later required a second operation after developing severe infections, a gastrointestinal fistula and a complicated abdominal abscess.
Hospital officials said the patient’s family has been struggling financially throughout the prolonged treatment. Both Sotphorn and his wife work as rubber plantation laborers with limited incomes while raising three young children, whose education has been affected by the family’s hardship.
According to relatives, mounting medical costs had left the family nearly destitute, and they considered taking the patient home because they could no longer afford treatment. Doctors, however, warned that ending treatment at that stage would seriously endanger his life.
In response, the leadership and staff of Hoang Anh Gia Lai University Medical Center organized a fundraising campaign to help cover the patient’s treatment costs.
Following intensive care and continued treatment, Sotphorn’s condition has improved markedly. Doctors said he is now alert, has regained a healthy complexion and is able to sit up and walk gently on his own.
