Currently serving as the leading assistant to South Korean head coach Kim Sang Sik with Vietnam’s national men’s football team, Đinh Hồng Vinh plays a key role in tactical preparation, player management and team operations ahead of major competitions, including the 2026 AFC U23 Asian Cup finals.
Vinh was also entrusted to lead Vietnam’s U23 side at the international CFA Team China tournaments in 2024, 2025 and 2026, where he focused on rejuvenating the squad by promoting a number of U21 players.
While results were not prioritized, the team displayed discipline and cohesion against stronger and more experienced opponents, losing only by narrow margins. The performances highlighted the composure and fighting spirit of the young squad, while also helping Vinh further refine his coaching philosophy.
Born in 1974 in An Nhơn, formerly part of Bình Định province, Đinh Hồng Vinh began his playing career with Hoàng Anh Gia Lai in 1992 before retiring in 2002. He later transitioned into coaching at the former Gia Lai Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, working across multiple youth levels from U13 to U21, as well as first-division, second-division and professional teams. Several of his former players, including Văn Long, Tăng Tuấn, Tuấn Mạnh, Hoàng Thiên and Anh Tuấn, went on to become important figures for the club from the Central Highlands region.
Alongside his coaching duties, Vinh has invested heavily in professional education, regularly attending football coaching courses to update his tactical thinking and management methods in line with international standards.
“That knowledge helps me view football more scientifically and systematically, and I can apply it back to the club as well as youth training”, he said.
In Vietnamese football, Vinh is considered a rare figure for simultaneously overseeing both technical and management responsibilities. Despite receiving offers with higher financial rewards elsewhere, he chose to return to his hometown and serve as president of Quy Nhơn United Football Club.
Throughout his coaching career, Đinh Hồng Vinh has held many important positions: leading youth teams such as U16 and U19 Vietnam, winning bronze medals at the Southeast Asian Championships in 2007 and 2009. He has helped shape a technical, creative, and modern playing style.
He is currently President of Quy Nhơn United, interim head coach of U23 Vietnam, and assistant coach of the national team.
According to Vinh, the dual role allows him to connect strategic management with on-field realities.
“As club president, I have an overall perspective on organization, training and operations. Conversely, when coaching the U23s, I stay in touch with the realities of top-level football, ensuring that my management does not stray from technical matters”, he said, adding that the broader interests of Vietnamese football remain his top priority.
At Quy Nhơn United, Vinh is implementing a long-term development strategy centered on youth training, squad building and professional club management. Drawing on experience gained with the national team, he is working to establish standardized systems covering training programs, physical preparation, tactical awareness and discipline.
Vinh believes young players must follow a continuous development pathway, with regular exposure to competitive matches and systematic training in fitness, tactics and mentality at every stage of their growth. He also evaluates players not only for immediate tournaments but for their long-term contribution to Vietnamese football.
Through decades of service as a player, coach and football administrator, Đinh Hồng Vinh has built a reputation for quiet persistence and long-term commitment, contributing both to the national team’s ambitions and to the foundations of football development in his hometown.
