At the ASEAN Tourism Forum in the Philippines in early 2026, Quy Nhon was named an “ASEAN Clean Tourist City” for the third time. Global travel platforms including Lonely Planet and Tripadvisor also listed the city among the world’s top 25 trending destinations for 2026, underscoring its rising profile.

The recognition reflects years of efforts to maintain environmental standards while promoting a tourism model focused on sustainability, safety and authenticity. Unlike many fast-developing tourist hubs facing overcrowding, Quy Nhon has pursued a slower, more measured approach.

Visitors say the city’s appeal lies in its simplicity. Long stretches of clear blue coastline run through the city, while clean, breezy roads and a steady daily rhythm define local life. Early mornings see fishing boats return to shore, while evenings draw residents and tourists alike to quiet walks along the beach.

David Nguyen, a tourist from Australia, said Quy Nhon offers a rare balance between essential tourism services and a sense of calm. He described it as one of the few places that still retains an “authentic feel” of a Vietnamese city, evident in both its landscapes and everyday life.

That authenticity extends to small, personal interactions. Visitors frequently cite children playing on the beach, roadside coffee stalls and friendly greetings from locals as memorable experiences.

Juliet, a visitor from Switzerland, said her most meaningful moments came from simply walking around the city and observing daily life. She recalled joining local children in a beach volleyball game, describing it as one of her most cherished memories.

Tourism data points to a broader upward trend in the region. In the first two months of the year, Gia Lai province recorded approximately 2.2 million visitors, up 14% year-on-year, with international arrivals rising 68% to an estimated 42,000. Within this context, Quy Nhon is increasingly seen as an alternative for travelers seeking less crowded destinations.

For some, the city has become more than a short-term stop. Mel Downs, a visitor from Vermont in the United States, chose Quy Nhon as a winter retreat, staying for several months to escape colder weather. He described the city as an “eternal summer” and a place not just to visit, but to live.

His experience reflects a broader shift in travel behaviour, with more international visitors extending their stays and returning multiple times. Industry observers note that tourism is increasingly driven by experience and connection rather than short-term sightseeing.

In response, Quy Nhon is gradually diversifying its tourism offerings. Coastal destinations such as Eo Gio, Ky Co and Thi Nai Lagoon are being linked to experiential activities, including fishing village tours, traditional fishing practices and fresh seafood experiences at local docks.

Visitors are also encouraged to engage more closely with local communities, rather than remain separate from them. This approach aligns with wider global trends toward sustainable and experience-based tourism.

Word-of-mouth promotion has played a significant role in the city’s growing reputation. Visitors’ personal stories, photographs and recommendations are emerging as powerful informal marketing channels.

Julie de Filipp, a tourist from France, said she would recommend Quy Nhon to friends and family based on her genuine impressions of a peaceful destination and its welcoming people.

Looking ahead, the city’s development strategy appears focused on preserving its core strengths while improving service quality and expanding tourism products. The emphasis remains on enhancing visitor experience rather than increasing volume.

Though not yet among the region’s most prominent destinations, Quy Nhon is steadily building a reputation as a place visitors want to return to, drawn by its understated charm, unhurried pace of life and enduring sense of authenticity.
