Nearly 40 scientists, researchers and doctoral candidates from 12 countries gathered on April 8 in Vietnam’s Gia Lai Province for the Expanded ASEAN Photonics Workshop, a four-day event focused on advancing research in light-based technologies.

The workshop, held from April 8 to 11 at the International Center for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE) in Quy Nhon Nam Ward, is jointly organised by the Rencontres du Vietnam Science Association and ICISE, in collaboration with École Centrale de Lyon - University of Lyon in France and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

Participants are presenting nearly 30 research reports spanning a wide range of specialised topics, including nano and metasurface photonics, topological and non-Hermitian photonics, photonic crystals, optical lattices, and light-matter interactions.

Additional sessions focus on quantum and nonlinear optics, integrated and silicon photonics, ultrafast and terahertz photonics, as well as photonic devices, lasers and emerging materials. Applications in sensing, imaging technologies and information processing are also being discussed.

Experts at the event highlighted that photonics and light-matter interactions underpin many advanced technologies, particularly in information transmission, sensing systems and smart device development. These fields are increasingly central to sectors such as information technology, telecommunications, biomedical science, new materials and quantum technology.

Organisers say the workshop aims to provide a high-level international forum for scientists and engineers to exchange research findings, explore emerging trends and discuss future directions in photonics.

The event also seeks to strengthen scientific collaboration between ASEAN countries and global partners, expand research networks across Asia and beyond, and contribute to shaping the future development of photonics in Vietnam and the wider Southeast Asian region.
