Pham Thi Hong Le secured victory in the women’s marathon at the 2026 National Marathon Championship - Tiền Phong Marathon, setting a new record and reinforcing her status as one of Vietnam’s leading distance runners.

Competing in Nha Trang, the 28-year-old from Gia Lai crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 42 minutes and 6 seconds, finishing more than two minutes ahead of Hoang Thi Ngoc Hoa of Dong Nai.

The result also contributes to qualification standings for the 2026 National Sports Games, marking the first time marathon results count towards the multi-sport event.

Hong Le’s latest triumph adds to an extensive medal collection built over four SEA Games and four National Sports Games, alongside numerous national titles. Her performance follows a strong showing just over a month earlier at the All-Star Marathon, where she clocked 2 hours, 38 minutes and 7 seconds, surpassing the previous national record.

Her success reflects years of disciplined preparation and experience gained across domestic and international competitions. Despite a relatively small stature, she has consistently demonstrated resilience and tactical maturity on the course.

Hong Le’s career has not been without setbacks. She has faced defeats due to stronger rivals, challenging weather conditions and strategic miscalculations. Notable experiences at SEA Games 30 in the Philippines and the 2020 Tiền Phong Marathon in Ly Son helped shape her competitive mindset and decision-making.

She also made significant career choices, including leaving the national team to focus on contributing to her provincial unit in Gia Lai. After more than a decade in professional athletics, she is among the few athletes in the province able to earn a living from sport, allowing her to fully commit to training and competition.

In the lead-up to this year’s race, Hong Le shared her preparation through livestreamed training sessions, offering insight into her routines and signalling confidence ahead of the event. Her extended training camp in Nha Trang, approved by her management unit, highlighted the importance of adapting to race conditions.

With over 13 years of competition experience, Hong Le has established herself as a central figure in Gia Lai athletics. Observers say her achievements underline the need for stronger institutional support, including improved training conditions and long-term career planning.

As one of the province’s most accomplished athletes, Hong Le is widely seen as a role model for younger generations. Calls are growing for policies and investment that match her contributions, ensuring she can continue to compete at the highest level and transition successfully after retirement.
