On the afternoon of September 11, Gia Lai Provincial People’s Committee Chairman Phạm Anh Tuấn met Frédéric Ollivier, Director General of the Normandy Regional Council, and representatives of local businesses as part of Gia Lai’s investment promotion mission to Europe.
The two sides identified potential areas of cooperation including high-tech agriculture, tourism, seaports and renewable energy, citing similarities in their historical and cultural foundations and complementary economic strengths.
Gia Lai and Normandy also agreed to explore cooperation in education and training, science and technology, and tourism, while strengthening connections to promote Gia Lai's agricultural products in the Normandy market.
Gia Lai’s preparations to launch international flights at Phù Cát Airport are expected to further facilitate exchanges in investment, trade and tourism between the two regions.
During a separate working session with Marc Lecerf, Deputy Mayor of the Caen-la-Mer urban community in Calvados, representatives of the Francophone Community Sports Association and local businesses, Chairman Phạm Anh Tuấn said Gia Lai was the first Vietnamese locality to directly engage with several French regions and localities to seek cooperation and investment opportunities following the high-level visit of General Secretary and President Tô Lâm to France.
He described the initiative as a concrete step toward expanding foreign relations through stronger connections between local governments and businesses, with the aim of turning opportunities created by Vietnam-France diplomatic activities into practical partnerships at the local level.
Chairman Phạm Anh Tuấn called on Normandy businesses to consider cooperation with Gia Lai in areas including artificial intelligence, resort and sports tourism, education and training, and renewable energy.
Gia Lai, he said, was committed to creating favorable conditions for Normandy businesses to research, explore and implement investment and cooperation projects in the province.
Lecerf highlighted the potential of the Caen-la-Mer urban community, describing it as home to a diverse business ecosystem and France’s largest seaport, as well as the fourth largest in Europe.
The area is also positioning itself as a national leader in renewable energy, including nuclear and wind power, he said.
Caen-la-Mer authorities are committed to strengthening business links between the two sides, promoting cooperation in production and product consumption while making use of the respective strengths of each locality, Lecerf said.
Businesses from Gia Lai and Caen-la-Mer subsequently held direct discussions on their business needs, development strategies and potential areas of cooperation.
The initial contacts in Normandy are expected to provide further opportunities for Gia Lai to expand cooperation with French localities and businesses, with the aim of establishing substantive, long-term and mutually beneficial partnerships.
