Gia Lai student wins silver at world international Mathematical Olympiad

A student from Vietnam’s Central Highlands has won a silver medal at the World International Mathematical Olympiad (WIMO), underscoring the country’s strong performance at the prestigious global contest.

Nguyễn Khải Hòa, a sixth-grade student in class 6A1 at Sao Viet Primary, Secondary and High School in Gia Lai province, earned the silver medal at the competition held from January 3-4, 2026, at the University of Hong Kong (China).

The event attracted 225 contestants from 10 countries and territories. Vietnam fielded a 23-member team and achieved a total of 23 awards, including six gold medals, nine silver medals, six bronze medals and two consolation prizes.

At the primary level, Vietnamese students secured six gold, seven silver, four bronze medals and two consolation prizes. At the secondary level, the team added two silver and two bronze medals.

With a strong foundation in mathematics, sound logical thinking and composure under pressure, Nguyễn Khải Hòa delivered an outstanding performance, bringing pride to his family, school and the education sector of Gia Lai province.

The World International Mathematical Olympiad is a prestigious global competition for outstanding students. Its international final brings together winners from contests such as TIMO, HKIMO and BBB, providing a global intellectual platform that promotes mathematical excellence and cultural exchange among young learners.
