The annual competition, jointly organised by the Vietnam Mathematical Society, Quy Nhon University and the University of Science under Vietnam National University, Hanoi, runs until April 11.

This year’s Olympiad has drawn 661 students from 90 academies and universities nationwide, with a total of 771 exam registrations across two independent subjects: Algebra and Calculus.

In a parallel initiative, the Vietnam Mathematical Society expanded the contest to high school students through an online format held on March 7 and 8, attracting 424 participants from 47 schools.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Associate Professor Dr Doan Trung Cuong, Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Mathematical Society, highlighted the growing relevance of mathematics in the era of artificial intelligence and the 4th Industrial Revolution.

He noted that advances in artificial intelligence, big data systems and automation are underpinned by core mathematical disciplines, including calculus, linear algebra, probability and statistics.

“Mathematics forms the foundation of the algorithms that drive modern technologies”, he said, adding that the Olympiad serves as a key academic platform for students passionate about the subject.

The competition aims to identify and nurture young mathematical talent, promote scientific research and academic exchange among university students, and strengthen collaboration between higher education institutions nationwide.
