Gia Lai province held a training workshop on October 6 to help businesses develop exports and strengthen trade with Cambodia, as infrastructure gaps and limited business participation continue to constrain cross-border commerce.

More than 80 delegates attended the event in Pleiku Ward, representing provincial agencies, local authorities, business associations, enterprises, cooperatives and household businesses.

The provincial Department of Industry and Trade organised the workshop with the Central Highlands branch of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and BIDV’s Gia Lai branch.

According to the department, trade through the Le Thanh International Border Gate has continued to grow.

Trade promotion and cargo and passenger transport have also been maintained, supporting commerce between Vietnam and Cambodia.

However, border trade remains below its potential. The range of goods traded is limited, and relatively few businesses conduct cross-border trade through the gate.

Commercial infrastructure, logistics, warehousing and services supporting imports and exports have developed unevenly. The border gate area has yet to establish large transshipment hubs, warehouses or inland ports.

Trading activity is also irregular. Some businesses have yet to treat Cambodia as a strategic market or develop long-term business, promotion and marketing plans.

Workshop sessions covered international trade, forms of Vietnam-Cambodia border trade and the treaties, agreements and domestic laws governing these activities.

Delegates also reviewed rules for border traders, purchases and sales by border residents, immigration conditions and local authorities’ responsibilities for managing border trade.

Businesses received information on programmes offering green credit solutions to help small and medium-sized enterprises in Gia Lai prepare to join global supply chains.

The department said the training was intended to improve participants’ understanding of policies and their import-export skills, helping them access markets and make use of tariff preferences and financial support.

These efforts are expected to encourage more businesses to participate in border trade, diversify the goods traded and improve trade efficiency through the Le Thanh International Border Gate.
