Gia Lai’s OCOP program drives rural growth and global reach

The “One Commune, One Product” (OCOP) program is transforming Gia Lai province’s rural economy, turning locally inspired products into internationally recognized brands that embody the essence of Vietnam’s Central Highlands.

Gia Lai now boasts more than 900 OCOP-certified products, including 92 rated four or five stars, reflecting strong innovation among local enterprises, cooperatives, and producers.

These achievements highlight the province’s strategic push to develop agricultural brands with export potential and sustainable growth.

A leading example is Phương Di Bee Cooperative in Gào commune, whose honey became Vietnam’s first five-star OCOP-certified honey at the national level in early 2025.

Managing around 15,000 bee colonies across Gia Lai and nearby provinces, the cooperative produces nearly 200 tons of honey annually, with comprehensive investment in production technology and quality control.

“Our cooperative has a skilled team of beekeepers and modern facilities, including vacuum water bath and pressing machines, to meet export standards,” said Director Trần Thị Hoàng Anh. Phương Di honey is now sold domestically on e-commerce platforms and exported to South Korea, France, and China.

OCOP certification serves as a “passport” for Gia Lai products to enter global markets, enhancing both economic value and the province’s international image.

Beyond honey, Gia Lai businesses are showcasing the highlands’ cultural and culinary identity through diverse OCOP products, from smoked chicken and sausage with é leaves to dried chicken and beef specialties. All products feature traceability codes and meet food safety standards.

Trần Lâm Gia Phát Co., Ltd., led by Director Trần Thị Bé, offers eight OCOP-certified specialties rooted in local cuisine. “We aim to spread Gia Lai’s unique flavors nationwide and attract more partners to expand distribution,” she said.

Digital transformation and e-commerce have also become crucial tools for market expansion. According to content creator Lê Phương Oanh, social media has helped Gia Lai’s specialties reach more consumers, but product quality and brand credibility remain the decisive factors, values reinforced by OCOP certification.

Through combined efforts from businesses, cooperatives, and provincial authorities, Gia Lai’s OCOP products have created significant economic impact and local pride.

Focusing on sustainability and brand development, the province continues to strengthen trade links and promote its key products, from coffee, honey, and pepper to coconut and other processed goods, as OCOP continues to serve as a vital launchpad for global market access.
