In the mountainous city of Gia Lai, a growing number of young people are embracing a “slow living” lifestyle known locally as the “Chill Guys” trend, a movement emphasizing relaxation, mindfulness, and self-care amid the pressures of modern life.

Rather than pursuing nonstop achievements or conforming to societal expectations, many of Gia Lai’s youths are turning to nature-based activities such as mountain climbing, cycling, and leisurely motorbike trips to restore balance and peace of mind. The trend reflects a shift among the younger generation toward valuing personal well-being over constant productivity.

Huỳnh Trần Thảo Vy, a content marketing professional from Pleiku Ward, discovered tranquility in mountain climbing earlier this year. Since March 2024, Vy and her friends have regularly conquered local peaks such as Chư Nâm and the Chư Đang Ya volcano in Biển Hồ commune. Once skeptical, Vy’s family now supports her hobby after seeing its positive impact on her health and energy.

“Climbing mountains brings me peace and allows me to be myself,” Vy said. “Standing on the summit, I feel small before nature but completely re-energized. For me, chilling means slowing down, breathing fresh air, and truly feeling alive.”

Similarly, Lê Thành Đạt, a young business employee from Thống Nhất Ward, finds his version of “chill” in motorbike journeys through Gia Lai’s western highlands. His rides take him through destinations such as the Ngô Sơn rice fields, Biển Hồ tea plantations, and century-old pine forests — experiences that help him unwind after work.

“For me, relaxation means doing what makes me feel light and free,” Đạt said. “Even on stressful days, riding through the city helps me release pressure and recharge for work.”

Nguyễn Thị Phương Thảo, a fifth-year Pharmacy student from Pleiku Ward, has also embraced the slow-living lifestyle through daily cycling and running. Since 2023, she has maintained her exercise routine even after moving to Ho Chi Minh City for her studies.

“Every time I cycle or run, my health improves and my mind relaxes,” Thảo said. “When assignments or exams pile up, this lifestyle helps me relieve stress and get ready for a new week.”

According to Ms. Phạm Quỳnh Lam, a Master of Education and psychology expert at the Awake Gia Lai Skills Development Center, the “Chill Guys” movement reflects a healthy approach to living.

“Living chill means living fully in each moment and enjoying whatever you do — whether studying, working, or engaging in daily activities,” Lam said. “To live chill, young people should balance relaxation with self-development and maintain a positive outlook in spirit, finances, and emotions.”

As this slow-living lifestyle spreads, Gia Lai’s young generation is redefining success — proving that sometimes, slowing down is the best way to live fully.
