Specialists from Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital on January 19 piloted endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for patients at Hoang Anh Gia Lai University Medical Center in Hoi Phu Ward.

ERCP, widely regarded as the gold standard for diagnosing and treating bile duct stones, is typically performed at major and highly specialized medical centers. The minimally invasive technique is also used to manage benign biliary strictures, acute pancreatitis, pancreatic tumors, and selected cases involving biliary and pancreatic cancers.

Dr. Phạm Minh Hải, Head of the Endoscopic Surgery Training Center at Ho Chi Minh City University Medical Center and leader of the visiting team, said the procedure demands extensive expertise and practical skill. The technique involves inserting an endoscope through the mouth, into the esophagus and stomach, and toward the duodenal papilla for diagnostic and therapeutic intervention.

According to Dr. Hải, ERCP offers quick execution, minimal pain, low complication rates, and high treatment efficacy. It is particularly suitable for elderly patients with multiple underlying health conditions, helping reduce risks and avoid invasive surgery. The visiting team is scheduled to perform ERCP for five to seven patients from Gia Lai and nearby areas.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai University Medical Center has, over 12 years of operation, partnered with Ho Chi Minh City University Medical Center to transfer advanced medical techniques and strengthen training for local clinicians. Its director said the hospital had sent doctors and technicians to Ho Chi Minh City for training and certification to prepare for the rollout of ERCP services.
