Gia Lai Province convened nearly 30 businesses and organizations on December 5 in Quy Nhon Nam Ward for a workshop on the carbon market and domestic carbon credit mechanisms, hosted by the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment.

Representatives from provincial departments, agencies and local authorities also joined the event.

Speaking at the opening, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Vũ Ngọc An said Gia Lai holds significant potential to join the carbon market thanks to its extensive natural forest area, large-scale wind and solar energy projects, and growing interest among local enterprises in adopting emissions-reduction solutions and transitioning toward a green economy.

Despite these advantages, Gia Lai continues to face challenges in participating in the carbon market. According to Mr. An, the workshop aimed to update stakeholders on new policies and regulations, share practical experiences, address current obstacles and guide local authorities, businesses and organizations as they prepare to engage with carbon-market mechanisms. He stressed that these efforts would help Gia Lai participate more proactively and contribute to the national objective of reducing greenhouse-gas emissions.

Experts and organizational representatives presented analyses on domestic and international carbon markets, the roadmap for Vietnam’s domestic carbon-market participation, international experiences and opportunities for Gia Lai’s economic sectors, as well as forest-based projects involving carbon credits in the province.
