Construction activity intensified in the final days of July 2026, with rollers, concrete pavers and transport vehicles operating continuously across the site. More than 30 work fronts are progressing simultaneously as rotating crews work in shifts to complete critical sections of the runway.
The project, valued at nearly VND2 trillion (approximately USD77 million), is being delivered by a consortium comprising Truong Son Construction Corporation, ACC Airport Construction Corporation and DACINCO Construction Investment Co., Ltd.
After nearly a year of construction, the site continues to employ more than 820 engineers, workers and technical staff, supported by hundreds of machines.
Major construction milestones have largely been achieved. The runway subgrade is essentially complete, while the crushed stone base has been finished along the full length of the runway.
Concrete pavement, drainage systems, perimeter fencing and auxiliary facilities are all progressing according to schedule. Installation of aviation equipment is also underway in preparation for calibration flights planned for August.
Vo Van Truyen, Project Director at ACC Airport Construction Corporation, said concrete work is being carried out by four crews operating in three shifts.
Concrete is poured exclusively at night to ensure temperature conditions meet aviation industry standards for strength and quality, while earthworks and drainage teams continue working to keep the project on schedule.
Tran Van Dao, DACINCO’s Project Director in the province, said the company has deployed nearly 300 pieces of equipment and around 100 workers.
He described the runway as a key infrastructure project and said the contractor has mobilized modern machinery and experienced personnel to accelerate earthworks and support other construction teams.
The pace of construction reflects close coordination among members of the consortium, with each completed section allowing subsequent work to proceed while maintaining technical requirements.
Project officials said quality control remains the top priority despite the accelerated construction schedule.
Inspection procedures cover every stage of construction, from material sourcing to structural layers, concrete batches and final acceptance of completed components.
Nguyen Quoc Bao, Deputy Head of the project supervision team from the Institute of Transport Science and Technology under the Ministry of Construction, said materials are inspected at their source and monitored through an on-site laboratory that continuously tests technical specifications. Concrete works are carried out under controlled temperature conditions, with protective coverings and strict curing procedures to ensure long-term durability.
Ngo Anh Tuan, Deputy Director of the Provincial Project Management Board for Transport and Civil Works, said the investor is coordinating with Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) and Air Traffic Technical Company Limited (ATTECH) to complete technical procedures, prepare for calibration flights, conduct project acceptance and enable timely commissioning. The objective is to shorten the transition from construction to operation while fully meeting technical, legal and operational safety requirements.
During a site inspection, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Pham Anh Tuan said the province has asked the Ministry of Construction to allow completed and operationally ready sections of the project to be handed over in phases. The approach is intended to accelerate the project's entry into service and enable ACV and VATM to take over specialised facilities immediately after acceptance.
Pham Anh Tuan described the project as a strategic transport investment expected to drive the province's future development. Once Runway No. 2 becomes operational, Phu Cat Airport will be capable of accommodating Code E aircraft or equivalent, providing a foundation for expanding air connectivity, including charter services from Northeast Asian markets.
